In addition to the C4 WRC driven by the Robert Kubica/Emanuele Inglesi crew and the twelve DS3 R3s competing in the Citroën Racing Trophy, Daniel Elena also took part in this year’s Rallye du Var in a Citroën DS3 R1.
The Monegasque drove Citroën Racing’s latest offering for the first time as the course-opening zero car. Here, the nine-time World Champion delivers his verdict.
Equipped with a four-cylinder 1.6VTi direct injection engine, a five-speed synchromesh gearbox and shock absorbers developed by Citroën Racing, the DS3 R1 is a small car with big potential. It belongs to a new generation of racing cars aimed at everyone, which are both easier to handle and more affordable. The most successful co-driver in world rallying drove the DS3 R1 as he covered the 240 kilometres of timed sections served up at this year’s Rallye du Var.
“Overall, it couldn‘t have gone any better! I came along to enjoy myself, and I had a great time!”, exclaimed Daniel Elena at the end of “Vidauban”, the Rallye du Var’s final stage. “The Citroën DS3 R1 is very quick and easy to get to grips with, especially since it has kept most of the production model’s mechanical components. Having said that, its level of performance has not been affected. The car also has very good road holding ability and immaculate handling, regardless of the difficulties of the road surface. It is perfect for a beginner who wants to learn about rally driving in complete safety and especially at a reasonable cost, which hasn’t been easy up to now. It’s the best piece of equipment for anyone looking to learn and improve, as well as for those who just want to enjoy a great experience, like the one I have had this weekend.”
