Undisputedly the leading car in its category since the middle of 2010, the DS 3 R3 has undergone a number of changes to enhance its performance, reliability and safety. From now on, it will go by the name “DS 3 R3-MAX”!

Citroën Racing has deployed its extensive expertise in passive safety and chassis rigidity on DS 3 R3-MAX. The standard monocoque chassis has been re-welded and fitted with a multi-point roll cage. In order to improve weight distribution, the battery and automatic fire extinguisher are positioned behind the seats. A steel skidplate protects the underside of the engine and also helps to lower the car’s centre of gravity. The flexible, FIA-homologated fuel tank remains in its original position.

DS 3 R3-MAX’s efficiency on all road surfaces stems from the quality of its suspension system. At the front, the production sub-frame has been altered so that tubular wishbones can be fitted. The axle is both lighter and stronger than on the production model. The shock absorbers boast several innovative features: the aluminium struts are lubricated in an oil bath, which improves the consistency and lifespan of the suspension, and the lower, frontally-offset anchor point, which increases the travel and the guiding length.

Equipped with a ‘pedal box’ with a dual master cylinder, the braking system received particular attention during the development of DS 3 R3-MAX. The front brake disks on the tarmac version have been thickened from 33mm to 34mm. The handbrake is hydraulic.

The other area of the car to have undergone a major overhaul on DS 3 R3-MAX is the engine. Based on the EP6 CDT block, the 1.6-litre direct-injection turbo engine has had its power raised to 234 bhp, while its torque now peaks at 350 N.m. The most visible changes are in the specially-designed exhaust manifold and the relocated turbocharger. In accordance with the regulations, many parts have been taken or adapted from the production model.

DS 3 R3-MAX is fitted with a semi-automatic six-speed gearbox, which reduces the time spent changing gears and increases reliability. The electronic management system only authorizes gear changes when the engine parameters allow it. The clutch pedal is still present, but is only used to drive off. During subsequent gear changes, the clutch is automatically controlled. The specific elements of the semi-automatic control (solenoid valves, actuators and pressure unit) have all been taken from the production model and adapted to the gearbox.
